Cutigliano

The Piazza del Municipio is dominated by Palazzo Pretorio and the church of the Madonna di Piazza with its vitrified terra cotta sculptures, and the church of San Bartolomeo with its stupendous examples of 17th century Florentine painting. A road from the village winds through pretty woodlands to the ski resort of Doganaccia (1530 metres above sea level), from the ridge of which you can see all the way from the Alps to the sea on a clear day. The Cutigliano area offers a walks and hikes including Lake Scaffaiolo, Melo, Pianosinatico, Pian di Novello and Sestaione. Pian degli Ontani and Rivoreta form part of the Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese and are home to the Museum of the People of the Apennines of Pistoia.

Living chessboard in Cutigliano

Every year ladies and knights parade through the splendid ancient village of Cutigliano in magnificent medieval costumes. At the end of the parade a spectacular game of living chess is held. The village comes to life to revive ancient trades and figures, with games and entertainment, medieval combat and a performance by the Cutigliano drummers.

Christmas flavours and markets

The medieval village hosts a Christmas market with plenty of gastronomic treats in the magical atmosphere of Advent and Christmas scenes.

Midsummer in Cutigliano

Piazzale Sant’Antonio in the splendid village hosts a crafts market with stands selling valuable traditional handcrafts, curiosities and samples of traditional local specialities. There are also musical performances and other forms of entertainment.
