Bozzano

In the second century before Christ, following the construction of the Aemilia Scauri road joining Pisa with Luni under the orders of the Consul of the Roman Republic Emilio Scauro, a number of colonists established farms which evolved over the centuries into the principal villages in the municipality of Massarosa, including the little hamlet of Bozzano. It was during the age of the Punic Wars that settlers first began to transform the swampy, wild regions between what is now Viareggio and Lake Massaciuccoli into fertile gardens and olive groves. |
Near Bozzano, in a dominant position overlooking the present town of Massaciuccoli, stand the ruins of an ancient Roman villa made of brick with its own private spa, testifying to this glorious past. The ruins are well-preserved and open to visitors, along with other findings from the age of the Roman Empire, including valuable mosaics which have recently been covered with modern structures to preserve them.
Just above the hamlet of Bozzano, surrounded by forest, stands Villa Chiatri, the first home owned by the great composer and musician of Lucca, Giacomo Puccini, purchased in 1898 with the proceeds from the success of his famous operas Manon Lescaut and La Bohème. The villa, now closed while awaiting restoration, stands in an amazing position and is well worth visiting just to experience its romantic, decadent atmosphere. The garden in front of it has extraordinary views ranging from Lake Massaciuccoli to the vast pine groves of Parco di San Rossore and the blue Tyrrhenian Sea.
Villa Museo Puccini

Not far from Bozzano, in the town of Torre del Lago, stands Giacomo Puccini villa and museum, in a romantic spot overlooking Lake Massaciuccoli, containing well-preserved testimony of the life and "Belle Epoque" times of this musical genius, who preferred quiet living to luxury. The villa’s chapel contains the tomb of the great composer, still visited by pilgrims who love his immortal operas, while the hall still contains the great piano on which he composed them. By the lake shore is a bronze monument to the great master. |
Festival Puccini in battello

The Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago is one of the most important musical events in the rich cultural life of Tuscany, one of Italy’s most important opera festivals and the only festival in the world dedicated to the great composer. The festival is held every summer, in July and August, right in the places where Puccini was inspired to write his immortal melodies. Madame Butterfly, Turandot, La Bohème, Tosca and Manon Lescaut were composed right here, and are brought back to life during the festival in a spectacular open-air theatre with 3400 seats built right by the lake, across from Puccini’s former home and present museum. |
