Festival of Corpus Domini
|
|
Corpus Domini has been celebrated in Camaiore with a solemn procession since the late 15th century. In the 19th century the creation of carpets of flowers along the route of the Blessed Sacrament was added to this tradition. And in the 1930s the “pula” first appeared, carpets of coloured sawdust which came to replace flowers. The various neighbourhoods in the city, represented by 14 groups of people, are involved in creation of carpets of sawdust up to 50 metres long. On the night before Corpus Domini, the streets in the centre of the splendid town of Camaiore come to life with these artistic carpets, made by artists with great precision and dedication, awaiting the procession. The carpets take shape in a single night, enchanting the faithful, pilgrims and tourists with the great skill, imagination and care with which they are made.
