Under the Republic of Lucca since the 14th century, Massarosa enjoyed a time of great wealth in the 16th century.
From this time until the 19th century the Massarosa area was a preferred site for building elegant noble villas, and a total of 26 villas were constructed in the area, some of which belonged to nobles and others to wealthy local merchants.
Sites of natural beauty in the area include Lake Massaciuccoli.
Massaciuccoli archaeological area
The area around Lake Massaciuccoli was probably a vast coastal lagoon in ancient times; evidence has been found of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times. At some time between the archaic age and the Hellenistic age the lagoon was occupied by Etruscan traders. It remained a centre of trade in Roman times, when the area was drained and made into a harbour on the Versilia coast.
On the first slopes and down almost as far as the left bank of Lake Massaciuccoli, the town of the same name preserves traces of an Etruscan settlement dating back to the Archaic and Hellenistic ages as well as ruins of two important buildings from the time of the Roman empire, a luxurious rest home and a posthouse.
In summer this beautiful corner of Versilia is home to “Massaciuccoli Romana - Festival dell'Antica Roma”, when the town of Massaciuccoli evokes the splendour of Imperial Rome.
