The most important town in the Versilia area, a centre of international importance for working marble and bronze, ever since it was founded in 1200 by Guiscardo da Pietrasanta the little “Athens of Versilia” (as it has been nicknamed for its history and artistic treasures) has been a gathering-place for artists from all over the world, from Michelangelo Buonarroti to Vasari and, in modern times, Henry Moore, Pietro Cascella, Kan Yasuda, Jean Michel Folon, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Joan Mirò and Botero. Many of them donated artworks to the city, making this lovely Tuscan town set amidst the marble quarries into a true open-air museum. |
The well cared-for town centre with its wealth of monuments has made the city a centre of art, with numerous galleries, marble sculptors’ studios and major seasonal exhibitions in the Piazza del Duomo and the church of Sant'Agostino. The church of Misericordia di S. Antonio Abate is famous for Botero’s paintings (Inferno and Paradise), and Piazza Duomo, the church and cloister of Sant’ Agostino, the church of San Francesco and the oratory of San Giacinto are all worth a visit.

Festival della Versiliana

Festival La Versiliana is a prestigious programme of new and popular performances, including national premieres, making it the most prestigious cultural event in Versilia. It is held in the lovely Parco della Versiliana, where every afternoon, in addition to the evening performances, the public may attend “Caffès”, afternoon artistic and cultural events in the magical atmosphere of the shade under the pine trees so beloved of Gabriele d’Annunzio, who stopped here with his literary friends to talk about poetry and his amorous exploits. |
