Forte dei Marmi

Festival La Versiliana is a prestigious programme of new and popular performances, including national premieres, making it the most prestigious cultural event in Versilia. It is held in the lovely Parco della Versiliana, where every afternoon, in addition to the evening performances, the public may attend “Caffès”, afternoon artistic and cultural events in the magical atmosphere of the shade under the pine trees so beloved of Gabriele d’Annunzio, who stopped here with his literary friends to talk about poetry and his amorous exploits.

The fair held on the patron saint’s feast day in Forte dei Marmi is a long-awaited event for thousands of holiday-makers who come here for the festival of the city’s patron saint at the end of the summer. The small town of Forte dei Marmi comes to life with stands selling local gastronomic specialities, designer clothing and fashionable accessories at discounted prices. From the morning until late at night, shows, entertainment and fireworks over the sea to say farewell to the summer.

The marble quarries of Carrara are very evocative places where marble has been quarried and worked for centuries. There are two types of quarries: closed and open. The Fantiscritti and Colonnata quarries are open to visitors with guided tours.

The street market at Forte dei Marmi is considered the most glamorous place for shopping, a real open-air outlet store where quality Italian-made goods are sold alongside hides, precious fabrics and ancient merchants' goods. The Forte dei Marmi market is a world-class tourist attraction, frequented by Russian and Arab magnates.
