Vicopisano
|
Vicopisano may be small in size, but it offers a wealth of medieval monuments: 12 towers dating from the 11th to 15th centuries, two 12th century medieval palaces, a medieval fortress designed by Brunelleschi, a Romanesque church also dating back to the 12th century and another church, San Jacopo in Lupeta, in the immediate vicinity of the town. |
Vicopisano was built on a hill where two navigable rivers flowed together: the Arno (the course of which was altered in 1560), linking the town with Pisa and the sea, and the Auser, which joined it with Sextum Lake (which was drained in 1860), from which the river came, and with the plains of Lucca.
Rocca di Vicopisano, also known as Rocca di Brunelleschi, is located on the property of Villa Fehr, within the municipality.
Vicopisano was an important economic power in the Middle Ages, reflected immediately in the quality of its medieval constructions.

The Holy Family comes down from Palazzo Pretorio, the court of King Herod, along Via del Pretorio, dotted with scenes enlivened with people in costumes: potters, basket-weavers, ironmongers, washer-women, shepherds and artisans...The procession ends in the square before the church with the arrival of the Holy Family in the cave and the birth of Jesus, the arrival of the angels and the celestial choirs. |
Rocca del Brunelleschi

Rocca del Brunelleschi is a colossal fortress on four levels built in Vicopisano in 1435 when the village near Pisa was conquered by Florence on July 16 1406. The complex, built to make the most of the lay of the land, forms a compact defensive system, one of the most interesting examples of Florentine military architecture of the first half of the 15th century. |
